i think, john boehner was right. he gave that press conference today and said, you know, people like me, it is true, i talked to congressman and they like boehner and the problem is they don't respect him enough to listen to him and they don't fear him and it is sad if you think about it. there is a structural problem that i think is sort of implicit here. the conservative base doesn't trust the republican leadership, and therefore the republican leadership is never given the leverage to compromise, and therefore the american public sees republicans as sort of stubborn and horrible p.r., but imagine being john boehner, the son of a bar keeper, a bar owner, and you want to be speaker of the house your entire career and like sam rayburn and tip o'neill and have all of that power and then you become the speaker and your own team doesn't even pass the bill that you want to pass. it has to be horrible for them. >> i heard criticism from republican members maybe they have could played it better. even after he made the deci

and that put john boehner in such a tough position. we saw this week the president in his press conference taunting republicans, even dana millbank of the "washington post" noted this in his column. obviously no supporter of house republicans. and he noticed that the president of the united states wasn't working necessarily in good faith with republicans on the other side of the aisle. going over the fiscal cliff is bad for everybody. i hope that both, all of our leaders on both sides of the aisle will try to embrace a solution before those tax rates go up for all americans. >> yeah. let me talk to you both about benghazi. an independent review found failures in leadership and management at the state department in terms of the attacks on benghazi and how it was handled and everything that followed as a result. do you think this will tarnish hillary clinton's reputation at all as she leaves the administration, maria? >> i don't think that it will, randi. you know, the secretary herself is the first one to say that the buck stops with he

we've heard from president obama and house speaker john boehner over the past few hours. and it sounds publicly as if they are still quite far apart. take a listen. >> every member of congress believes that. every democrat, every republican. so there is absolutely no reason, none, not to protect these americans from a tax hike. and at the very least let's agree right now on what we already agree on. let's get that done. >> the president has offered so far simply won't do anything to solve our spending problem. and begin to address our nation's crippling debt. instead he wants more tax hikes and spending that will hurt our economy. >> a couple of three senate options could happen. one of them, go over the cliff and watch what happens. another push for a fall back measure and the third push for a broad deal. that is a wide range of things on the table, randi, particularly when you think of the date today and we have so few days left before this deadline that was imposed that was supposed to be a doomsday scenario. >> the higher taxes and paychecks, how concerned should we b

the house speaker john boehner was dealt what seems to be a hugely embarrassing blow by his own party when they refused to vote on his plan b proposal. how bad is it for republicans right now? >> well, right now, they are sitting at home in their home districts. that's what happened. congress left town. and they are sort of in a way house republicans have abdicated their role in this process. you know, normally if you were in their role, you want to maintain a position of trying to shape whatever legislation might go forward. but now the ball, they've taken it out of their court. it comes down to the senate having to do something which is democratic led but in order to push something through will require some republican support there. so house republicans have kind of abdicated their role in this to the senate minority leader mitch mcconnell. if perhaps he could get on board with something with democrats in the senate to move along, presumably that might be able to be pushed through the house. the house republicans at least some of them, would have to vote on that in order to pass it
